On Tuesday night at Beijing's Poly Theater, the stage belongs to the young musician Laufey, as she brings something different to the ongoing Beijing Music Festival.

The Icelandic-Chinese singer-songwriter gained notability in the early 2020s and describes her musical style, a blend of jazz pop and bedroom pop, as "modern jazz."

She collaborates with the China Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductor Jin Yukuang for her debut on the Chinese mainland stage. Serving as the composer, singer, and cellist, she presents songs from her albums, including her latest one released on September 8.

She was also honored with an award at a ceremony preceding the concert by the Beijing Music Festival. Zou Shuang, the festival's artistic director, announced her as the winner of the 2023 Young Musician.

"Through her, we can witness the talent of the internet era as she rose to fame. The era of young people with diverse cultures has arrived," commented Zou.
