Chinese pop singer Cai Xukun has responded to the recent abortion allegations made against him, clarifying that he did have a relationship with a woman identified as Miss "C" in 2021, stating that their personal matters were resolved in 2021 and their relationship was consensual. The singer denied allegations of Miss "C" being underage, forced abortion, and his involvement in other illegal activities, according to a statement released by Cai's official Weibo account on Monday. Netizens expressed skepticism of Cai's statement on China's social media.
Cai's studio also issued a statement on Monday, stating that legal action against "forced abortion" and many other false statements have been taken to protect Cai's rights and lawsuits are underway.
These responses came after about a week of circulating abortion allegations. On June 26, a paparazzo claimed that Cai's mother hired a private investigator to monitor a woman and installed a pinhole camera at her door in 2021, after the woman claimed that she had become pregnant as a consequence of a one-night stand with Cai and later had an abortion at Cai's request.
Relevant hashtags related to Cai's response quickly topped the trending list on Sina Weibo, and sparked heated discussions. Some of Cai's followers flocked to his Weibo account to express their support, with one saying "We are here with you." However, some accused him of betraying their "love," expressing disappointment in his actions.
"Why don't you cherish your future and career? I am so disappointed in you," read a Weibo comment.
Despite the support shown by some, there were also Weibo users who remained skeptical of Cai's statement. One user remarked, "In summary, the woman was really pregnant and had an abortion. 'I' want to continue to make money in the industry." This comment garnered over 245 thousand likes.
In the wake of the controversies surrounding Cai since June 26, state broadcaster CCTV's videostreaming platform, Yangshipin, has removed related videos about Cai. And his name has been removed from the official Weibo accounts of state-owned Beijing Radio and Television Network and Chinese streaming platform iQiyi.
On Saturday evening, the Beijing Advertising Association issued a statement via its official WeChat account, cautioning brands, entertainment agencies, and multi-channel network (MCN) agencies to engage in appropriate "risk management" over their association with a male singer surnamed Cai in the Chinese mainland due to the growing hyped up trend surrounding recent events involving the singer.
While the statement didn't explicitly mention the individual's full name, online users speculate that it refers to Cai Xukun.
On Friday, the official website of the National Enterprise Credit Information Publicity System showed that Cai's studio has been included in the list of businesses with abnormal operations due to its unavailability for contact at its registered residence or place of business.
With over 38 million followers on Weibo, Cai serves as a spokesperson for over a dozen brands, including the renowned Italian luxury fashion house Prada. Currently, Cai is on his 2023 world tour, with the Singapore leg of the tour scheduled for July 15th.
The 25-year-old hit singer gained prominence in 2018 through his participation in the idol survival show Idol Producer and subsequently debuted as the central figure of the Chinese boy group Nine Percent.
