The 12th National Traditional Games of Ethnic Minorities will be held from November 22 to November 30 in Sanya, South China's Hainan Province, with teams representing China's various ethnic minority groups competing in hundreds of games, according to a news conference held in Beijing.


The games consist of competitive and performance categories. There are 18 competitive events, including dragon boat racing, single bamboo drifting, crossbow shooting and coconut tree climbing, with the latter being added as a competitive event for the first time.

The performance category is divided into athletic, skill, and comprehensive sections, with an expected total of over 160 events.

The emblem and mascot of the games, designed by the design team from the Academy of Arts and Design at Tsinghua University, were also revealed at the press conference. The emblem consists of a deer turning its head, the number "12" and bougainvillea, the provincial flower of Hainan. The deer turning its head is a cultural symbol of the city of Sanya, while "12" represents the "12th" edition of the games.

The mascot is named "Ji Bei," a sea spirit derived from traditional Chinese poetry. Dressed in a spacesuit, the sea spirit symbolizes the vastness of the stars and the sea. the The Hainan Free Trade Port is reflected in the AI smart glasses the mascot wears.

Two themed songs and eight promotional paintings were also crafted for the games.

The games, held every four years since the second edition in 1982, are the highest-level national traditional sports events with the greatest influence in China.

"The games will be the highest-level and largest-scale comprehensive ethnic sports event held in Hainan before the custom closure operation of the island's free trade port," Yin Libo, vice governor of Hainan Province said at the news conference.
