The sudden death of giant panda Huan Cai, a 1-year-old male panda born at the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda, was caused by acute hemorrhagic necrotic enteritis (AHNE), according to an announcement on the base's official Wechat account.
Released on Wednesday, the post said that Huan Cai died on October 2.
The giant panda appeared to have become ill at 6 pm on October 1, when he showed signs of depression and refused to eat. By 9 pm, Huan Cai suddenly produced blood stools and his condition deteriorated rapidly. The medical team and relevant experts have made every effort to rescue the panda, said the statement.
After checking the test results and analyzing the situation, a team of experts confirmed that Huan Cai's death was caused by AHNE, but no clear pathogenic microorganisms could be found, ruling out the possibility of accidental ingestion of foreign objects and food poisoning, said the announcement.
Chinese internet users have expressed their sadness upon hearing of the panda's death.
"I can't believe it! He is only a 1-year-old cute baby, what a pity..." said one user on Sina Weibo.
"Every panda wants to grow up safe and healthy, and we also hope that Huan Cai is free from illness and happy," another user posted on Weibo.
The giant panda was born in December 2022 and breeders took care of him very well.
"We are incredibly saddened by the loss of Huan Cai. We will endeavor to improve the diagnosis and treatment of critical and sudden diseases of giant pandas, and do our utmost to maintain the health and safety of the giant panda population," they added.
