Designer calls for infusion of more traditional elements

Traditional Chinese costume designer and professor Li Wei called upon Chinese designers to develop original creative ideas that incorporate traditional Chinese elements into their designing works, as an exhibition featuring her works kicked off at the Academy of Arts and Design Gallery, Tsinghua University.

"Chinese designers should cultivate their unique creative DNA and promote the spirit of Chinese culture with a global perspective," Li told reporters.

"Showcasing the beauty of China's vision in modern designs requires the charm of inheriting traditional handicraft."

Li has been teaching for 40 years and has been dedicated to the study of traditional culture, using traditional handicrafts as a medium, according to Academy of Arts and Design, Tsinghua University.

Titled "Clothing: Reflection of the Origin," the exhibition encapsulates Li's profound artistic philosophy, as she delves into innovative practices in clothing art design and contemporary art research.

The inheritance of non-heritage handicrafts, such as weaving, dyeing and embroidery, is frequently seen in Li's art works.

"Li's clothing and fiber art works are the result of two decades of unwavering dedication to clothing design and material research," said Gao Ling, a professor and art critic.

"It demonstrates that fashion designers will ultimately become philosophers of clothing culture, revealing the essence of life in tangible and intangible spatial entities."

The exhibition will run until November 7.
