Advanced technology introduced in Zhejiang’s new museum, first of its kind in China

With the opening of the Zhejiang Provincial Museum's new branch on Tuesday, a full show of technology across the new museum was held outside so visitors could see the charm of its "digitalized cultural relics."

The opening of the new venue, known as the Zhijiang branch, in Hangzhou, East China's Zhejiang Province, is accompanied by 13 exhibitions, among them the 10,000 Years of Zhejiang - Zhejiang History and Culture Exhibition is a highlight.

"We have over 2,000 objects exhibited in 10,000 Years of Zhejiang, taking up half of the total number of all exhibits we have collected here in our new venue," said curator of the Zhejiang Provincial Museum Chen Shuihua. 

The use of new technology at the branch has attracted a large number of visitors. Its special digital exhibition hall is one of the first exhibition halls for digital cultural relics established in China. 

The new exhibition hall uses 3D digital space modeling and other advanced technology to allow visitors to have an immersive experience with the cultural relics, promoting the innovative integration and development of digitalization in cultural relic protection as well.

To make sure visitors can see the exhibits behind the glass clearer, the new venue also introduced low reflection glass, which reduces light interference and greatly shortens the distance between viewers and cultural relics.

The new venue is a total of 100,000 square meters in size, and it is three times the size of the main museum, while the exhibition area is 32,012 square meters.

The hall has multi-functional experience exhibition areas that cover artifacts ranging from celadon wares and paintings to folk customs.

"We plan to have 18 exhibition halls. Currently, we have 15 fully ready to go," noted the curator.
