A night bar at the Ninghai county, East China's Zhejiang Province has recently been fined for inviting actor Sun Xing, who was once detained on suspicion of using drugs, to perform without first getting official approval.

The bar Didi, established in 2018, has been fined 50,000 yuan ($7,007) by the Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Press and Publication in Ninghai county.

Details regarding the penalty reveal that Sun, a Hong Kong actor was invited for a commercial performance in November 2022. He performed a song and received 20,000 yuan. The bar also reimbursed his travel expenses.

The Didi bar was fined for holding "commercial performances without approval," the Bureau stated. The bar is also suspected of violating management regulations that specifically tackle "malfunctions" that occur in the commercial performance industry.

Xue Pingjun, a cultural critic, told the Global Times that Sun is not the only performer to have his career stigmatized by drugs and that the fine is a "continued warning to celebrities to fulfill their public moral responsibility" while "reminding the industry to more strictly evaluate performers' credibility."

In 2011, Sun was detained by the police on suspicion of providing drugs to others and tested positive for drugs such as crystal meth. According to reports, the star later went to a drug rehabilitation center for a month in Sanya, Hainan Province.

Before his drug scandal, Sun was popular for often playing a lovable comedic figure in notable TV productions such as The Heaven Sword and the Dragon Sabre, adapted from the martial arts works of novelist Louis Cha, also known as Jin Yong.

Celebrities with a history of drug involvement are deemed "unethical celebrities" and have become targets of campaigns like the Clear and Bright campaign, which aims to maintain a healthy online environment and prohibits their participation in media productions in China.
